If you ask most basketball fans to name their favorite role player ever, they’ll probably go with someone like Andre Iguodala, Robert Horry, or Shane Battier. Guys who made huge plays, stayed consistent, and helped their teams win titles. And that’s cool. But for me, the answer is different. My favorite role player of all time is Nick Young. Swaggy P. And I mean that 100 percent.
Nick Young’s time with the Golden State Warriors in 2017–2018 might not have lasted long, but it left a lasting impact. He wasn’t a star. He wasn’t even in the playoff rotation every single game. But he fit into that team in a way that just made sense. The Warriors were already stacked with Steph, KD, Klay, and Draymond, but adding Nick Young was like sprinkling a little extra chaos and confidence onto a superteam that already had it all. He came off the bench, pulled up from 30 feet without hesitation, and celebrated every bucket like it was the game-winner. And honestly? That energy mattered. Nick didn’t fill the stat sheet. He averaged about 7 points per game that season, mostly in limited minutes. But you couldn’t ignore him. When he checked in, the crowd paid attention. He had the kind of confidence that made every shot feel like it was going in, even when it wasn’t. And when it did go in? That classic Swaggy P smile, the shoulder shrug, the finger guns. He made the game fun. In a league where everything is so serious all the time, Nick Young brought something different. He brought joy.
What made it even better was that he finally got his ring. After years of bouncing around the league, from Washington to LA to short stints here and there, he finally landed in the right spot. And while he wasn’t the Finals MVP or even a playoff hero, he earned that championship. He played his role, stayed ready, and most importantly, stayed himself. Seeing him hold that trophy, goggles on, grinning from ear to ear, was one of my favorite moments of that entire Warriors run. It felt like the whole league finally said, “Yeah, Swaggy P belongs here.” A lot of role players blend into the background. Nick Young never did. He made you laugh. He made you shake your head. He made you smile. He never changed who he was to fit in, and that’s exactly why he fit with the Warriors. He brought personality to a team full of focused killers, and somehow, it worked perfectly. So yeah, he’s not a Hall of Famer. He’s not a defensive anchor or a Sixth Man of the Year. But Nick Young is my favorite role player of all time. And if you watched him during that 2018 season, you probably understand why. Forever a champion. Forever Swaggy.
